After confirming observations with the second manager, they politely ask the driver to step into a private area and say, âWeâve noticed youâre having difficulty walking and speaking clearly. For your safety and others, we need to check in with you before you continue driving.â
They inform the driver that for the time being, they will not be allowed on the road; âWe canât have you drive in your current state. For now, weâll need to send you home, but we can follow up tomorrow to discuss what happened.â . The manager makes sure the driver has a safe way home.
2. Unusually Slow Reactions
The manager sees the driver moving sluggishly and taking much longer to respond to questions or tasks than usual so they ask the second manager to keep an eye on the driverâs movements while pretending to discuss a work task and quietly compare notes.
After confirming, the manager says, âHey, you seem really tired or out of it today. Iâm concerned you may not be fit to drive right now. Letâs take a moment to assess how youâre doing.â
After completing the checklist and concluding the driver isnât fit to drive, the manager says, âFor everyoneâs safety, weâll need to take you off deliveries today. Weâll check in tomorrow to see if everythingâs okay.â The manager makes sure the driver has a safe way home.
3. Bloodshot Eyes & Smell of Alcohol
The manager notices a strong smell of alcohol on the driverâs breath and bloodshot eyes when the driver enters the store. The manager pulls the second manager aside and explains the situation; âI think I smell alcohol on [driverâs name]. Can you take a few minutes to talk to them while I watch?â
After getting a second opinion, they ask the driver, âIâm smelling something concerning, and I want to make sure youâre okay before sending you on any deliveries.â
If alcohol is detected, they say, âItâs clear youâre not in the right condition to drive. Youâll need to go home, and weâll touch base tomorrow about the next steps.â The manager makes sure the driver has a safe way home.
4. Excessive Sweating & Nervousness
The driver is sweating profusely, even though the store is cool, and seems unusually nervous or jittery. The manger asks the second manager to join to casually observe the driver while doing a quick task.
After both managers discuss any concerns privately. the first manager says âYou seem really tense today, and Iâm worried you may not be well. Letâs take a few minutes to figure out if youâre in the right shape to drive.â
They confirm the driver is unfit to drive and informs them, âIâm concerned for your safety and others on the road. Iâll have to send you home today and check in tomorrow.â The manager makes sure the driver has a safe way home.
5. Erratic Behavior & Mood Swings
A driver who is usually calm is now showing erratic mood swings, alternating between agitation and extreme friendliness. The manager quietly asks the second manager to help observe and verify the erratic behavior during routine tasks.
After observation, the manager says to the driver, âIt looks like youâre having trouble staying calm today, and thatâs worrying for a driver. Letâs step aside and check on your condition.â
The manager then explains that due to their mood swings, they wonât be allowed to continue driving; âFor safety reasons, I need to send you home. Letâs talk tomorrow and figure out the next steps.â The manager makes sure the driver has a safe way home.
6. Drowsiness & Drooping Eyes
A CSR reports to the manager that they see a driver struggling to keep their eyes open and nearly nodding off in between deliveries.
The manager thanks the CSR for making the aware and discreetly asks the second manager to observe whether the driver continues to appear drowsy during deliveries.
After confirmation, the manager says, âIâve noticed youâre struggling to stay awake. For your safety, I want to make sure youâre okay before continuing.â
After completing the checklist, the driver is deemed too drowsy, and the manager informs them, âWe canât allow you to drive in this condition. Weâll send you home to rest, and we can check in tomorrow.â The manager makes sure the driver has a safe way home.
7. Unexplained Euphoria & Hyperactivity
The manager notices a driver is overly energetic and talkative, seemingly euphoric without cause. They ask a second manager to engage the driver casually to confirm the hyperactivity and compare notes afterward.
After reviewing their checklists together the manager says to the driver, âYou seem really wired today, and itâs a little concerning. Letâs take a moment to check in on how youâre feeling.â
They determine the driver canât calm down and is unfit, saying âYouâre not in the right state to drive. Weâll send you home today and follow up tomorrow.â The manager makes sure the driver has a safe way home.
8. Pale Skin & Lack of Focus
The manager observes the driver is pale, with dilated pupils, and appears to be zoning out frequently., they brief the second manager on what theyâve noticed and ask them to observe while interacting with the driver.
After comparing impairment checklist, the manger says to the driver; âYou donât look well today, and youâre having trouble focusing. We need to check if youâre okay to drive.â
Both managers agree the driver is impaired, and say, âIâm worried for your safety, so weâll send you home. Weâll follow up tomorrow about how youâre feeling.â The manager makes sure the driver has a safe way home.
9. Confusion with Simple Tasks
A driver is struggling with basic tasks, such as completing an order or getting the delivery address right. The manager in charge asks the second manager to observe the driver and see if the confusion continues, then compare observations.
After they compare Impairment Checklists the manager in charge says, âYouâre having trouble completing tasks you usually handle easily. Letâs take a moment to assess how youâre feeling.â
After they asses, it is concluded that this team member has significant changes in their personal life causing them to get distracted today. The manager says âIâm sorry to hear about that, would you like to continue to work for the day inside the store with some extra help, or would it be better for you to go home?â the driver agrees to work inside for the rest of their shift.
10. Strong Odor of Marijuana & Red Eyes
The manager notices a strong smell of marijuana on the driver, and their eyes appear red and glassy. They ask a second manager to take a closer look and confirm the smell and signs of impairment with the checklist.
The manager approaches the driver and says, âThereâs a strong odor and signs that you might not be in a fit state to drive right now.â
Since impairment was confirmed by both managers, they tell the driver, âWe canât allow you to drive under these conditions. Weâll send you home today and follow up tomorrow.â The manager makes sure the driver has a safe way home.
11. Red Eyes & Distracted
A driver arrives with red eyes and seems distracted, a manager discusses the observations with a second manager and decide to fill out their impairment checklists and ask the driver privately; âYou seem a bit out of it today, and we want to make sure youâre okay to drive. Is everything alright?â
The manager pulls the driver aside to discuss their findings, but after a conversation, itâs revealed the driver has severe allergies and is distracted because of a personal issue, not substance use.
Once the driver explains their allergies and personal situation, the manager says, âThanks for letting us know. We just needed to make sure everythingâs fine. Feel free to take a break if you need it.â
